Wine Routes Costers del Segre.

To understand and feel the spirit of a good wine, you have to fully understand the environment where it's produced. For this reason and before entering the cellar, where a good wine can be years before see the sun light, we invite you to take a walk around the spot, in order to find the roots from which the wine gets its very own characteristics.

 

We start with visiting Arbeca Villages:Fortress Vilars d'Arbeca inhabited for 400 years (750aC - 325 BC), is located in a flat area about 4 km from the town of Arbeca in Les Garrigues . Built 2800 years ago is unique in the Iberian Catalan world.

After this visit we will go to the Castle of Verdú.

Verdú Castle is one of the most emblematic buildings of the town and was erected around on the street and the houses that nowadays form the village of Verdú. Ramon Berenguer conquered these territories in 1055, and in 1072 they belonged to the family of Arnau Company. From this moment the casle has gone passing from hand to hand until nowadays.

Castle Verdú, which was the origin of the town and after its defensive funtion during the early days of the reconquest, it became the residence of the abbots of the monastery of Poblet that were staying in the town. The fortress, which preserves Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance progressively degrading over time until the City Council of Verdú acquired in 1988.

In Roman times there is evidence of vineyards in the area of Verdú, as amphorae found inside had stored wine. Sometime later we can see the importance of the presence of Poblet in the village of Verdú (1227-1835). The monastery of Poblet exercised control over those lands which were given to farmers in the vineyard to halves or leases. Verdu was created in the agricultural union and Section of the winery, wine very good quality, due the domain of the variety macabeo. The vineyard is still currently the most widely cultivated in the area.

As to the weather you find a thermal contrast within the continental one with a lot of sunshine and low rainfall. Each subsector is different climatic and soil and mountain landscapes combined together. The reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Tempranillo wines are at the top the diversity produced here. Powerful, balanced and structured. Whites are classics made with Macabeo, and Parellada Xarel.lo or modern chardonnay, sauvignon white or riesling. White grape production is used mainly in the production of  Cava (champagne).

About 12 October every year is celebrated the Feast of the Harvest and Wine, with a sample of wine and gastronomy where you can buy directly from wineries all Verdú and area.

Our route will continue to Vallbona de les Monges. A female Cistercian monastery founded in Catalonia in  c.XII.

The monastery soon radiated vitality by founding other monasteries, including Sant Hilari de LLeida Bonrepos, the la Morera del Montsant, el Pedregal, near Talladell ,the Bovera, al término de Guimerà, Zaidía , de Valencia and Valldonzella in Barcelona, ​​among others. All this flowering is a test of the expansive force of the spirituality of the nuns.

An interesting winery to visit in this town is the l’Olivera. Cooperative cultivated vineyards producing wines and olive oils and seeking to express where they're sold. A Social integration cooperative, which includes disabled people  that are actively involved in all the process .They Create wines with the Vallisbona 89 name considered one of the best wine cellars. The cooperative produces 7 types of white wine, one black, two sweet wines and two sparkling wines to style cava, and two varieties of oil.

The next stop we have the Old Cathedral of Lleida named Seu Vella de Lleida. Its stands on a hill that has its name, from which you can see the whole city, the river Segre and many of the dry zones. The Old Cathedral is part of a monument built by the King's Castle and also the Suda and military fortification around them.

Another place to visit in our  tour of the Costa del Segre DO is the Monastery of Santa María de Bellpuig de les Avellanes, ancient abbey of canons governed by the Order of Saint Augustine. It is in the town of Balaguer in the area of ​​Noguera.

From very ancient time the Monastery has cultivated vineyards, which have produced canons wine. In 1910, Marist arrived; they found the old vineyards and the cellar of the canons. Since then the Brothers of the Monastery have continued to grow wines.

They offer to you six varieties divided into two groups: Triad canons and Abbot select ones.

The first group  would be: Black Monastery, Monastery Pink, and White Monastery.

In the second group you would have: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon white.

Finally visit the Cellars Raimat. The first winery was built in 1918 by modernist architect Rubio i Bellver. A further improvement in 1988 by Domingo Triay, gave the cellar its present appearance.

Its most emblematic wines are Raimat 27 Chardonnay and Raimat Abadía. It also produces high-quality sparkling wines, such as the Raimat Grand Brut.
